Upgrade to vSphere 4.1 – Preparation

Current environment configuration:

  • 1 Virtual Center Server vSphere4 u2, running on Win2k3 32bit – physical box
  • virtual center DB is running on this same physical host like VC server
  • several vSphere4 U2 ESX hosts

Future environment configuration:

  • 1 Virtual Center Server vSphere4.1, running on Win2k8 R2 64bit – virtual machine
  • VC server will be connected to this same DB like it is now connected (to keep all settings, rights, licence etc.)
  • several vSphere4.1 ESX hosts – customer didn’t decide to move to ESXi version :/

Preparation:

  1. Up and running virtual machine with 64bit OS, Win2k8 SP2 64bit is recommended
  2. Native client installation pack MSSQL2005 64bit version – here.
  3. Installation pack for vSphere 4.1 Virtual Center – can be downloaded from VMware download center
  4. Pre-upgrade package for ESX 4.0 to ESX 4.1
  5. ESX 4.1 (upgrade ZIP from ESX 4.0)
  6. SQL Studio for MSSQL 2005 – good tool to make VC DB backup
  7. Links to Upgrade documentation
  8. User name/passwords for ESX server, VC DataBase,
  9. Agreed outage time slot for Virtual Center Server
